Models of Authority at Leeds IMC on Monday 6th July 2015

Hot on the heels of the launch of the website, six members of the Models of Authority team (hereafter, MoA6) will be giving papers at the annual medieval extravaganza at the University of Leeds. So, if you'd like to find out more about the project, our research and our plans for the website -- or just luxuriate in images of medieval Scottish charters -- then you'll have a perfect opportunity on Monday 6th July. There are two sessions, details of which are below.

Title: Models of Authority in Scottish Charters, c. 1100 - c. 1250, I: Introducing Scottish Charters

Dauvit Broun (University of Glasgow): "Introducing the Models of Authority Project: Scottish Charters, c. 1100 - c. 1250"

John Reuben Davies (University of Glasgow): "Standardisation of the Diplomatic in Scottish Royal Acts down to 1249"

Abstract: The first paper in this session introduces the project, explaining how its combination of new and traditional approaches to palaeography and diplomatic has the potential to offer a new perspective on the origins of government. The second and third papers showcase recent work on two critical areas for charter- studies in this period: understanding cartularies, focusing particularly on Scotland's earliest example (Aberdeen University Library Scottish Catholic Archives MS J1/3), and the emergence of a distinctively royal repertoire of structured prose.

Tessa Webber (Trinity College, Cambridge): "Script as an Image of Authority: Sources of Influence on the Handwriting of Scottish Charters - 1100-1250"
Alice Taylor (King's College London): "Gilbert of Stirling, Royal Scribes, and the Justice of the Scots"

Abstract: The first paper discusses how the experience of developing digital techniques for researching set hands in the DigiPal project is being used in the 'Models of Authority' project to create a framework for analysing cursive features in Scottish charters. The second and third papers investigate models that influenced the handwriting and terminology of Scottish charters. The second draws on the corpus of digitised charters assembled for the project, and the third focuses particularly on the charters in Paisley Abbey's cartulary.

(Please note, that admission to these sessions will be on a first-come, first-served basis. We recommend that you arrive early in order to avoid disappointment.)

In addition, two members of the MoA6 will be involved in other sessions at the IMC. Alice Taylor will be moderating Session 1716, "Keeping It in the Family: Intergenerational Relationships, Power, and the Control of Lands in Medieval Western Europe", on Thursday 9th July at 2.15pm. And I will be participating in Session 405, "(Mis-)Using Digital Tools in the Digital Palaeography Age: A Round Table Discussion" with Francisco José Álvarez López (University of Exeter and King's College London) and Ainoa Castro (Ohio State University) on Monday 6th July from 7pm.
