To all sons of Holy Mother Church, as well present as future, Grim son of Guy the carter of Roxburgh, greeting. Let all men know that I have granted and given, and for the wellbeing of my lord William de Somerville, and for my own soul, and for the soul of my father, and of my mother, and of all my ancestors, the whole toft that my father held in Berwick, and just as I have held it, as it is set out in the charter of the aforesaid William, to God and the church of St Mary at Melrose, and to the monks serving God there, this land, however, have I given to them in pure and perpetual alms with all its liberties and pertinents within the burgh and outside the burgh, so freely and quietly and fully as any other alms is freely and quietly possessed, reserving the service of the lord William de Somerville and his heirs which is owed to him from me and my heirs in return for the same land. And because I do not have my own seal for affirming and attesting this my donation, Master Adam of Eccles at my request has placed his own seal on this my present charter. With these witnesses, Master Adam of Eccles … chaplain, Richard of Dunston, Roger son of Henry, Ralph the cellarer, Reynaud of Hoyland, William the clerk … the clerk, … Edolf Portman, Goscelin Lunnock, William Francis, William White, John Black, William Heem.
