Malcolm king of Scots to all worthy men of the whole of his land, clerk and lay, French and English, Greeting: Know that I have granted and by this my charter made firm to the Church of Melrose and the brethren serving God there the donation which Earl Cospatric made of the land of Hartside, and of a saltpan, for the salvation of the souls of his ancestors, as the charter of Cospatric himself to them bears witness. I make firm, in addition, the land that they hold in ferme of Edward, his own brother, saving my service, as the charter of Edward bears witness, and all easements of their own lands as their charters bear witness.
