Cospatric the earl, to all his friends and men, and to all son of holy Church, Greeting: Let all know as well future as present that I, with the consent of my heir and with his assent, have given and granted to God and to the church of St Mary at Melrose and to the monks there serving God, in perpetual alms, for the welfare of my soul and of King David and of Earl Henry, my lords, and of my ancestors and successors, Hartside and Spott, by their correct boundaries, between themselves and between Stenton, which they had in the times of King David and my father, and namely between Pressmennan burn and the Brock, and as the Brock proceeds to Hellesdene, in wood and plain, and also common pasture of moor and easments. I therefore will and enjoin and grant that the said monks should hold and have this aforesaid alms of me and my heirs in perpetuity as free and quit from all secular service and exaction as others freely and quitely and honourably hold and have their own alms. These aforementioned boundaries, however, I and my heirs shall warrant in respect of all men to the aforesaid monks.
