Jocelin, by the grace of God bishop of Glasgow, to all of the sons of Holy Mother Church, as well future as present, sends greetings in Christ. Know us to have given and granted, and by this our charter to have made firm, to God and the church of St Mary at Melrose and the monks in that place serving God, as free and everlasting alms, the toft in the burgh of Glasgow that Ranulf of Haddington built during the original construction of the burgh for the benefit of the monastic house of Melrose, as fully as he built and held it. Wherefore we will that the aforesaid monks of Melrose shall hold and possess the aforesaid toft as freely and quietly as they freely and quietly hold and possess any alms. With these witnesses: Hugh, abbot of Newbattle; Simon, archdeacon of Glasgow; Elias, Master John, Elias, Philip, Bede, Ingram, Herbert, canons of Glasgow; Archibald of Douglas; Robert of Montgomery; Hugh of Pettinain; Alexander, the bishop’s steward.
